How to Transfer Videos Through Email

Here are the best ways you can send a video that is too large to attach to your email without losing quality.

When it comes to transferring videos, you need to make sure you don’t compromise on quality while abiding by the file size limit of the method you are using. After capturing an exciting moment on video, you would naturally want to share it with your colleagues, friends, and family members. However, there is always an obstacle such as the file size limit imposed by your email provider. Most of the email providers set a limit to the size of the file that you can attach. Even if you have an excellent email client that lets you send large files, your recipients won’t be able to receive them as they will be exceeding the limit. On the bright side, there are ways you can send a video that is too large to attach to your email.

How to Transfer a Video via Gmail

As stated above, transferring a large video via email can be a challenge. Take, for instance, Gmail. You can only send a message that is no larger than 25 MB using Gmail. So, if the video you want to transfer is less than 25 MB, then you can simply attach it to your message and send it through. Moreover, if you have a bunch of videos that you want to send and each of them does not exceed 25 MB, you can attach them separately but on the same thread. That means you will send them one by one, but the receiver will get them under the same thread. That way, you avoid spamming the receiver’s mailbox.

However, if the video you wish to share is larger than 25 MB, you will then need to use Google Drive. Google Drive is part of G Suite, and it smoothly integrates with your Gmail account. All you have to do is upload and save the file to your Google Drive. Copy the link to the video uploaded to your Google Drive platform and share it with the recipient(s). Note that this does not give the recipient(s) access to your entire Google Drive. It only allows them to view and download that particular video attached to the link.

Sharing a link to a file on Google Drive via Gmail is quite easy. All you need to do is follow these simple steps:

  1. Access your Gmail account and sign in.
  2. Create a new message by clicking on the Compose button located on the left side of the window just above the Inbox tab.
  3. Choose the recipient(s) that you wish to share the video with and insert their address(es).
  4. Add the subject of your email and then type the message.
  5. Check for the Google Drive icon and click on it.
  6. If the video you wish to share is already saved on your Google Drive, then you should click on the My Drive tab, look for the video file and choose Drive link.
  7. Otherwise, click on the Upload tab and click on Select files from your computer. After browsing your computer, select the video file by clicking on Open.
  8. Click Upload and wait a little bit for the video file to finish uploading to Google Drive.
  9. Once the upload has finished, the video will now appear in your message as a link.
  10. Hit the Send button. If link sharing has not been enabled yet, you will be prompted to turn it on.
  11. Once your recipient receives the email message, they can click on the link to get redirected to the video file on Google Drive.

Having accessed the video file, your recipient(s) can view it, download it to their local storage drive, or save the video to their Google Drive account.

How to Send a Video Using the Windows 10 Mail app?

You can send an email no larger than 20 MB via the Windows 10 Mail app (aka Outlook). If you are on a business account, the message size limit is capped at 10 MB. So, if your video does not exceed the limit, you can simply attach it to an email and send it through to your recipient(s).

However, if the video exceeds the size limit on your account, then you need to save the video file to OneDrive and share the link with your preferred recipient. Here are the simple steps to follow to send videos that are larger than your Outlook account message size limit:

  1. Navigate to the Microsoft Office website and sign in by inserting your account credentials.
  2. Choose OneDrive, and it will open on a separate browser tab displaying all your uploaded files and folders.
  3. Choose the location you wish to save the video file to.
  4. Click on Upload and then select Files.
  5. Browse your local storage to find the video file you wish to share, choose the file and then click on Open.
  6. Your video file will begin uploading. Just wait for a notification to pop up indicating that the upload has been completed.
  7. Click on Share Link.
  8. Insert either the recipient’s email address or their name depending on whether they are on your contact list.
  9. Type your message text and then click on Send once done.

Your recipient will receive an email with a link to the video. When they click on the link, it will redirect them to the video, where they can choose to view it, download it to their local storage, or save it to their OneDrive account.

How to Share a Video via Email Through Yahoo

Although Yahoo has a better message limit compared to the Windows mail since it is capped at 25 MB, the difference isn’t that significant. Just like with other mail services, if your video is below the limit, you can send it as an attachment to your preferred recipient. However, if it is above the limit, you will need to follow these steps:

  1. Select a cloud drive, such as Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox, and save the video file you wish to share.
  2. Access your Yahoo Mail and compose a message to the recipient you wish to share the video with.
  3. Choose the attachment option to send files from a cloud provider.
  4. This will insert a link to the file saved to your cloud drive so that anyone with the link will be able to view and download it.
  5. Once you are done sharing the file, you can head over to your cloud drive and turn off sharing.

How to Share a Video via Apple Mail?

Apple OS X Mail comes with a message limit size of 20 MB. Using this mail service, you can send videos that are less than 20 MB in size as an attachment. Anything bigger than that, and you will need to use the alternative method outlined below. To send larger files, users can rely on iCloud and Mail Drop to upload the video file they wish to share. Note that once the video file has been uploaded, it will be available for 30 days for the recipient to view and download it before being deleted.

  1. Ensure that Mail Drop is active on your account.
  2. Attach the file you wish to share to your message.
  3. If the file exceeds the limit, it will be automatically uploaded to your iCloud account in the background.
  4. Your recipient(s) will then use the link from the message to get the file from your iCloud server.
