How to Use the Updated Classic Video Editor Movie Maker

Windows Movie Maker was officially discontinued in 2017. Windows 10 was launched without video editing software installed, but after the fall updates you probably noticed an editor included in the Microsoft Photos app.

The latest Windows Movie Maker edition has a lot of useful features: having media organized in a timeline, possibility of adding special effects or 3D animations, setting the whole thing to music. But there is one interesting limitation: Microsoft added Movie Maker to the Photos app.

Movie Maker is a brilliant tool for any type of video editing. So let’s go through the process of locating Movie Maker on your computer and using it to create your personal masterpiece!

1. How to find Movie Maker

If Movie Maker doesn’t appear to be installed, there is a question of how to find it? Just add some photos or videos to the Photos app on your PC. After this, click the green “Create” button and choose “Custom video with music”. And voila!

2. How to work with video clips

After clicking the “Create” button you will be able to put together a simple movie with background music. Drag and drop the media files into a new position in the Storyboard to rearrange them. A Preview option is available at the top right: position the circular playback marker, then click the “Play” button. For cutting your video clip, select it in the Storyboard and click “Trim”. Choose a start and an end point by dragging the rectangular markers, then click “Done”.

3. Add video effects

In the menu above the Storyboard find the “Motion” options which will help you add some interesting special effects to your video. You can preview the effect using the “Play” button on the left. If you like it, confirm by clicking “Done”. By the way, you can go back any time and change effects.

Want to give your video a totally new look? Not a problem! Go to the “Themes” button in the top menu. Different themes include music and appropriately styled titles. Good news: the music will be automatically adjusted to the length of your video clip.

Want to add filters like on Instagram? Not a problem anymore either! Select the “Filters” tab and choose an option. Make your choice and click “Done”.

Select “3D effects” if you want to draw attention to something in your video. To choose when the effect should appear, move the green slider under the preview window, use the arrows to adjust the effect’s angle and direction.

4. Choose music for your video

Click the “Music” tab and select a suitable soundtrack for your video clip. You can either choose the built-in songs or the one from your PC. If the sound in your video is too loud, select the “Volume” to turn it down or even mute.

Notice you shouldn’t use copyright-protected music in videos if you are going to publish your video in internet.

Otherwise you may have problems in future.

5. How to send large video files

When your video is created, in the top menu select the “Export or share” option and pick the size you want: small, medium or large. Unfortunately, you will not be able to set the resolution or frame rate. Your video will then be rendered (which might take a while) and saved.

Once that’s done, you can share your masterpiece with friends or upload to the internet. We recommend using a secure file transfer service if you want to send your high-resolution video clip to someone over the web. FileWhopper is a great option when you need to send large files!
